V-Rings

General information

V-rings (axial shaft seals) are one-piece sealing rings that are available in a wide range of elastomers.
The standard materials are NBR or FKM. Depending on the media to be sealed and the operating temperatures, V-rings made of silicone, EPDM, or HNBR are also available. The most common designs are types VA, VS, VL, and VE. Other materials and special designs are available on request.

V-rings are mounted on a shaft with which the seal rotates, whereby the V-ring lip seals against the fixed counter surface. Due to its design, the seal can compensate for shaft misalignment (inclination up to approx. 0.4 mm per 100 mm) and shaft runout.

The shafts do not require any special surface roughness, but the surface should be as free of oil and grease as possible. Since the mating surface affects the sealing effect and service life, it should be free of burrs, scratches, nicks, and contaminants.

At rotational speeds above 8 m/s, axial support for the seal must be provided, as centrifugal force reduces the contact pressure of the sealing lip. At speeds above 12 m/s, additional measures should be taken to secure the seal seat, e.g., installation of a V-ring in an axial groove.
